The Rattie Uprising:
Art & Education Exhibit
The Rattie Uprising
Art for Animals’ Sake is producing a traveling art and education exhibit to raise awareness for some of the most vulnerable and under protected members of our animal family, the rat.
The Rattie Uprising will illuminate the social and emotional lives of some of the world’s most misunderstood animals. The exhibition will bring together images depicting rodents throughout art and popular culture.
The exhibit will travel throughout 2016 with art education workshops scheduled at each location. Youth will participate in hands on art events, encouraging empathy for all animals through creative artistic opportunities with locations in Los Angeles, Seattle and San Francisco.

The exhibition is a celebration of the rat, mouse and smaller animals who are often misunderstood, are the subject of cruel experimentation and, in the case of most rats and mice, are excluded from the Animal Welfare Act which purports to regulate the care of animals used in scientific research.

Exhibition Details
From printed materials and photographs to digital media, examples of rat and rodent inspired art will be collected in a travelling gallery show designed to adjust to most exhibit and public viewing spaces.
The exhibit has been designed to be transportable and to expand or be reduced to adjust to any layout. The presentation will include three moveable walls that fold for easy transportation, one with an embedded digital screen and a kid’s corner. These elements will easily fit into most gallery spaces requiring minimal wall space for hung art when not available.
Maligned throughout human history as the carrier of disease and subjected to cruel scientific testing, this exhibition will begin a conversation between artists and writers about small animals and their role in society.
Students of all ages will participate in the creation of artwork and discuss the role that compassion for all animals plays in our everyday interactions with others.
This exhibit will be a combination of photographs, artwork and text inspired by these animals’ vastly complex social and emotional lives. The exhibit will challenge the viewer to reconsider rats as intelligent, devoted, and eminently lovable companions.
[1] The term “rattie” connotes an appreciation for rats and is used here as an affectionate term interchangeable with “rat”.
